Wheel of Knowledge Event Details

Where: Hoi Cho Tet, International Centre
When: January 21, 2012 from 11am – 8pm
Game Location: Children’s area, across from community booths

About the Wheel of Knowledge Game

Initially created by Dr. Tran Thai Hoa of VCSA-London, the Wheel of Knowledge game was adapted and further developed by VCSA-Toronto in hopes of educating the local community about various subjects related to our Vietnamese heritage in a fun and interactive manner. When first introduced at Hoi Cho Tet 2011 held at the International Centre, the Wheel of Knowledge garnered much attention from children and parents alike. As a FREE game for children between the ages of 6 – 15, audience members enjoyed watching participants test their knowledge in the four categories of Vietnamese History & People, Vietnamese Culture, Vietnamese Language, and Vietnamese Geography.

For the upcoming Hoi Cho Tet to be held on January 21, 2012, VCSA-Toronto has expanded the game database to include a greater variety of questions and we have incorporated some exciting new elements, such as a competition for all Vietnamese Language School Students in the greater Toronto area. This competition will allow students between the ages of 12-13 to form small teams of 3 – 6 players and represent their Vietnamese Language Class. Registered teams will compete against other schools for prizes, a trophy, and the honor of being the Wheel of Knowledge Champions! If you are a Vietnamese Language School teacher interested in registering your class or a student interested in participating in the Wheel of Knowledge Competition, please email VCSA-Toronto at toronto@vcsa.org for more details. Additionally, game questions from each category are available to download so that participants and student competitors may study and research the questions beforehand. Please visit the Download page in the Media dropdown box on the VCSA-Toronto website.

How the Game is Played

The Wheel of Knowledge Game involves the projection of an electronic gaming program onto a screen and a specialized light circuit system. Four participants may play at once and depending on the line-up to play the game, participants have an opportunity to answer 2 to 4 questions during their turn.

Two game hosts will spin the electronic wheel and the wheel will randomly stop on one of the four categories before a question from the category appears. The hosts will read the question and possible four questions (A, B, C, D) in its entirety before the participants may press their game button to activate their individual light indicator. Only the light indicator of the participant who presses his/her game button first will light up and this participant will have one opportunity to answer the question.

If the question is answered correctly the 1st participant will be awarded a token, which can then be traded in for a free prize. If the 1st participant fails to answer correctly, the game hosts will ask the remaining three participants to provide an answer. If the 2nd participant also fails to answer correctly, it is the hosts’ discretion to let the 3rd and 4th participants play until the right answer is provided.

VCSA-Toronto is proud to work with the Vietnamese Youth Action Committee to launch a new initiative: Reach for the Stars Mentorship Network for young Vietnamese Canadians!

SIGN UP NOW as a Supporter, Mentee, and/or Mentor!

DEADLINE TO SIGN UP: NOVEMBER 10, 2011

http://www.vietfederation.ca/mentorship.html

What is it?
This is the formal establishment of a national network of young Vietnamese Canadians for mutual support, inspiration, and success at the individual, career and community levels. Based on needs and interests, The Vietnamese Youth Action Committee (VYAC) will match young people to mentors at the peer and inter-generational levels. By filling out the online questionnaire, you will be added to our network of young Vietnamese Canadians. Then let us know if you would like to become a supporter, mentee, mentor, or both!

Why a Network?
Following the 2010 VYAC national Vietnamese youth survey and national workshop, we identified the need to set up and support an infrastructure to create a national network for young Vietnamese Canadians. Through this network, young people will be able to connect with others who share common interests and passions, and to receive the support they need in a culturally sensitive manner. Youth will be inspired by positive role models to help them to “Reach for the Stars”.

What’s in it for me?
Preparation is the key to Success! This mentorship network is an opportunity for you to meet great people you wouldn’t normally get to know; a chance to receive valuable advice and support in your personal, career, and community endeavours. And for those who mentor others, it’s an opportunity to change someone’s life.

What does a Mentor do?
A mentor-mentee relationship can be very casual. It can include activities such as helping with homework, talking on the phone or via email about an experience, or participating in a cultural or sports event together. Mentors genuinely care about their mentees. They listen and have empathy and together mentors and mentees forge a deep relationship. VYAC will provide orientation and ongoing support to mentors.

What if I don’t want to be a Mentor or Mentee now?
It’s OK. You can still fill out the online questionnaire so that you can join the national network. Down the road, you may find the need to connect with someone for your education, career or leadership aspirations. Or you may find time to become a mentor. By being on the network, VYAC will be able to send you information about upcoming events and opportunities.
